The Best and Worst Locations In The UK For Getting A Good Night’s Sleep

Struggling to sleep? We can often blame a variety of reasons for us not being able to get a good night’s kip but did you know that where we live may also play a part in how much sleep we get?

We’re all pretty much aware and even make humour in the fact that different regions and counties around the UK have their own stereotypes which we associate with them such as accents, sayings, foods, personality traits etc. however it seems that we could also add quality of sleep to the mix!

Sleep Cycle

Most of us will not be particularly thrilled at the sound of our alarm waking us up from our slumber, and we don’t tend to associate our alarm sound as anything to get excited about!

Sleep Cycle is an app that you can download on your phone which analyses your sleep pattern by picking up sound and tracks your movement in bed.

However, the app also uses a wake up phase (usually 30 minutes) which will end in your alarm going off.  During this sleep cycle period, the app will monitor signals from your body in order to wake you up more softly during this lightest state of sleep.

Sleep Cycle’s Study and Findings

Sleep Cycle conducted a study in April and May 2015 producing some pretty interesting findings about how different UK cities and towns faired up when it came down to the amount of sleep they were getting!

The study included 29,486 males and females who used the Sleep Cycle alarm clocks, aging from 18-55 who volunteered to have their sleep data analysed between April the 1st and the May 31st.

So now you know a little bit about the background to the study, let’s take a look at the juicy bits of the data and see how our UK cities and towns compare when tested to find where people gain the most and least sleep.

Brace yourselves, the areas in which people got the least sleep in May were:

  • Coventry (7h 14 min)
  • London (7h 16 min)
  • Croydon (7h 17 min)
  • Slough (7h 17 min)
  • Bolton (7h 18 min)

The surprise package of Coventry narrowly beat the capital to the award no city really wants to pick up!

Now let’s take a look at the places where people received the most sleep. Fingers crossed it’s your hometown or city!

  • Bournemouth (7h 35 min)
  • Bath (7h 33 min)
  • Peterborough (7h 32 min)
  • Norwich (7h 29 min)
  • Southampton (7h 28 min)

If you’re from Bournemouth the chances are that you’ll probably be feeling pretty smug right now, and so you should be as you’re the area receiving the most amount of sleep according to Sleep Cycle’s data!

Wake Up Mood

On the other hand, it might not necessarily be true that the more sleep we get, the better mood we are in. Therefore, Sleep Cycle also recorded which locations woke up in the best and worst moods. The results have indicated that the more sleep we get doesn’t automatically determine our mood when we wake up!

Are you from Peterborough? If so then you are in luck as you are not only the third area receiving the most amount of sleep, but you are also the area who is waking up in the best mood! Milton Keynes, Reading, Glasgow and Derby were also recorded as being the areas which wake up in a good mood, however these four locations weren’t recorded as getting the highest amount of sleep.

However, in terms of the locations who didn’t quite get their full quota of sleep, this may draw more links to these areas waking up in a less positive mood.

Bolton was recorded as being the fifth place getting the least amount of sleep, and was also found to be the location waking up in the worst mood.

Furthermore, both Croydon and Slough were amongst the list of areas receiving the least amount of sleep, and were also included within the five areas waking up in the worst mood. Manchester and Preston were also included within the category of areas who wake up in the worst mood.

Don’t Pack Your Bags Just Yet!

Whilst Sleep Cycle’s study has shown which locations are getting the most and least amount of sleep, as well as who is and isn’t waking up in the best mood, it’s no reason to set your Sav Navs for Bournemouth just yet.

It’s important to take note of the fact that the study was conducted during a two-month period in 2015, therefore the results could vary seasonally or throughout different months of the year, so don’t be too disappointed by the results if you are from Coventry!
