What tog is a winter duvet?

Winter is here and with it comes the colder nights. During the autumn months, you may have been sleeping under a thin summer duvet or without a duvet at all – so it’s about time that you levelled up your sleep and upgraded to a higher tog. In the lead-up to winter, investing in a heavyweight duvet with a higher tog can help you stay warm and keep your bed extra snuggly.

Here we’ll guide you through our favourite winter duvets and our recommended tog for those chilly nights.

Keep warm and cosy

Sometimes all you want to do is snuggle up in bed under a thick winter duvet.

A winter duvet is much thicker than a summer one, as it needs to keep you warm during those colder months. Even if you don’t use it every night, having one on hand will come in handy when the cold snap inevitably hits. Duvets can be found in many different weights and togs and our buying guide can also help you find the right one for you.

Improve your sleep

Choosing the right duvet in the winter season will allow you to maintain your body temperature at night so that you do not wake up shivering during the night.

It is also a good idea for people who are sensitive to cold temperatures or suffer from rheumatism or arthritis. A quality winter duvet with a high tog rating should retain heat well. Especially when compared to other types of naturally filled bedding such as goose down or feather quilts.

Here at Sleepy People, we have a wide range of winter duvets including top picks made especially for allergy sufferers to protect against bacteria and dust mites.

What tog do I need for winter?

A tog rating measures the warmth of your duvet. In other words, the higher the tog = the warmer the duvet.

The main difference between a winter and summer duvet is the fill. For example, a summer duvet has only 60g of soft and fluffy fibres (known as hollow fibre) per square metre. In comparison, winter equivalents have up to 200g per square metre. That’s double or triple the amount of down in each of your feathers.

If you’re looking to find out more about duvet togs and what it means (tog is short for thermal rating) then keep reading. These are our top three togs for winter:

15 tog duvet

Think the cosiest of all winter duvets. The 15 tog rating is one of the highest tog ratings available, so it will keep you insulated and at your warmest. We love cosying up all toasty warm in an extra-thick and marshmallow-like duvet so if this also sounds like you, then a higher tog could be the perfect option.

13.5 tog duvet

If you are sensitive to changes in the weather, try a 13.5 tog temperature regulating duvet instead— it’s a little heavier than the 10.5 tog duvet and will still ensure you stay warm when it’s cold outside.

10.5 tog duvet

When it comes to duvets, the 10.5 tog duvet is the best all-rounder for most people. It is still considered to be a good weight for winter but is less insulating than the higher ratings. This tog is often seen as an all seasons duvet as it can work well in both summer and winter.

Top tip: you could also add a 4.5 tog summer duvet on top of your 10.5 tog as an extra later to create the ultimate winter duvet.
